This verse is said to have been sent to Ransetsu, Bash’s favourite pupil. Tradition says that the bagworm chirps in a feeble, sad voice, longing for its parents, and has been a favourite insect with poets from of old. I cannot but feel that this verse symbolizes Bash’s life of quietude. is pronounced either “iori” or simply “io.”

Come to listen

To the basket-worms,

To my lowly hut.
